Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is the nodal centre for Olympiad programmes
in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Astronomy. The programmes aim at
promoting excellence in science and mathematics among pre-university students.
The Science Olympiad programme in India leading to international participation is
implemented by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR) in collaboration
with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) and the Indian Association
of Chemistry Teachers (IACT).
The Astronomy Olympiad programme in India leading to international participation
is implemented by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (TIFR) in collaboration
with the IAPT and Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai.
The Mathematics Olympiad is conducted under the aegis of the National Board of Higher
Mathematics (NBHM).
The National Olympiad Programme in physics, chemistry and biology is overseen by
a National Steering Committee constituted by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
A separate National Steering Committee constituted by DAE oversees the Astronomy
Olympiad. The Olympiad Committee of the NBHM oversees the conduct of the Mathematics
Olympiad.
The programme is financially supported by BRNS (DAE), Department of Science and
Technology, Department of Space and Ministry of Human Resource Development.
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual event, which is held in the
month of July in a different country every year. This activity has been conducted
regularly for the past 37 years. However, India began to participate in the IPhO
only recently - since 1998. It is hoped India 's participation in the IPhO will
boost the level of science education in the country. The physics Olympiad programmes
in India are geared to select and train participants for the IPhO.
The selection of Indian participants for the IPhO is carried out in the following
four stages:
- National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP),
- Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO),
- Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) and
- Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT),
The final stage is the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
